The Diary of a Budgeter – Day 57

Bobbi Olson Articles, The Diary of a Budgeter

Hello Tax Refund!

Woo hoo! My tax refund hit the bank today! I was so excited for it to arrive, so I could transfer it into my prize-linked savings account. Not only does it take it out of my immediate reach, making it more difficult for me to spend, but I get another chance to win, with every $25 deposited!

So it’s an exciting day, because not only does that addition put me almost half way to my 6-month job loss fund, but I’ve got lots more chances to win big money, without having to buy lottery tickets!

I remember being excited about getting a refund before I started budgeting. Scott and I could go wild for a short time, spending with reckless abandon! But I must admit, even when we were doing it, it really didn’t feel all that great. I knew deep down I’d regret it later – always did, but it’s so hard to resist spending that “free money!”

So today when it came in, I let myself daydream for a moment about all the different things we could do with the money. But I couldn’t come up with anything that excited me as much as reaching my goal! The accomplishment is going to feel great, but more than that, it will be done and I can move on to another big goal! I have a couple more biggies and then, we can loosen up a bit and spend a bit more freely. It will feel much better at that point, because my bases will be covered. I can’t wait for guilt-free spending!

Until then I’ll diligently put aside any windfalls, large or small, and let my excitement come from watching my savings rise to meet my goals!

What will you do with your tax refund? Let me know! Bobbi@centsablechat.com
