Mind over matter
I was watching “The Truman Show” last night and there were two scenes that really struck me. The first was an exchange between the host of “True Talk” and Christof, the creator of “The Truman Show.” Here’s how it went:
“True Talk” Host: Why do you think Truman has never come close to discovering the true nature of his world, until now?
Christof: We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented; it’s as simple as that.”
So true. I grew up believing I was poor and there was nothing I could do to change it. These were the circumstances I was dealt and I’d be best off to accept and make the best of them. It didn’t occur to me to question it or search for a different path. I kept myself poor for a long time because I accepted my situation for what it was.
The other exchange that stood out was between Christof and Truman’s first love, Sylvia. Here’s how it went:
Sylvia: He’s not a performer, he’s a prisoner. Look at what you’ve done to him!
Christof: He could leave at any time, if his was more than just a vague ambition. If he was absolutely determined to discover the truth, there’s no way we could prevent him.
Wow! What we don’t know CAN hurt us! I used to feel like a financial prisoner. So sick of my financial situation, but powerless to change it. Always feeling sorry for myself because I was poor while others got to be rich, do what they wanted, have nice things, work when they wanted, spend their time however they chose!
Finally, I realized I could leave my financial prison anytime! Once I knew it was possible, it became much more than just a vague ambition – it was a burning desire I couldn’t let go. And from that moment on, there was no stopping me!
I learned as much as I could and, through trial and error, created & followed a plan to debt freedom. Now I’m working my way to financial freedom – and loving life!
My situation is not at all unique. Many others have been in the same place and felt the same way. They too have the power to leave their financial prison, anytime they choose! I hope others will join me in recognizing their power and forging ahead to the life of their dreams!
